Norlhais a non-profit, non-political, non-religious NGO based in Lausanne, Switzerland, that supports people living in the most remote areas of the Himalayas. Through its farming, environmental and gender awareness projects, it strives to ensure food security and generate extra income for families in a sustainable manner while at the same time protecting the environment. It also has a strong focus on supporting women. Norlha is currently looking to replace:

Executive Director

Part time, modestly paid and partly volunteer position

The Executive Director has the crucial role of leading the organisation in delivering its annual and strategic objectives; together with the Senior Management Team (SMT) implement Norlha’s strategies and plans; the Executive Director is an ex-officio board member and ensures exchanges between the SMT and the board. S/he also represents the organisation to key stakeholders and ensures Norlha’s vision and values are followed.

Mission and activities

  • Lead the implementation and development of Norlha’s mission and vision;
  • Maximise the impact to beneficiaries in a sustainable and cost effective manner;
  • Oversee the creation, development and strengthening of Norlha’s development Knowledge building and sharing strategy;
  • Ensure sound organisational growth and development;
  • Lead a team of senior department managers (SMT), including the Regional Office leader based in Kathmandu;
  • Coordinate between departments; initiate and monitor overall planning and funding;
  • Guide the Norlha Regional Office in Kathmandu assisting in its regional strategy;
  • Report to and liaise with Norlha Board, coordinate the exchange between the SMT and the board;
  • External representation and networking;
  • Oversee and nurture cooperation with international Norlha delegations;
  • Lead the development and updating of strategic documents, ensure development, production and delivery of key management documents;
  • Stay close to the staff and have a hands-on approach to internal and external activities.

Candidate Profile

  • Sound organisational and personnel management involvement;
  • Experience in Development sector; knowledge of the Himalayas is a plus;
  • Experience in networking and establishing lasting relationships; good knowledge of and contacts in Swiss networks is a plus;
  • Ability to motivate teams, showing the value of their unpaid work;
  • Knowledge of finance and budgeting, fluency in French and English;
  • Driven to contribute to poverty reduction of marginalised people;
  • Willingness to travel to the Himalayas to provide oversight guidance and leadership;
  • Ready to roll up his/her sleeves and involve in practicalities of the work when necessary;
  • Willingness to engage and work for modest financial compensation.

Norlha offers

  • Direct engagement in poverty reduction and development of people in need;
  • Experience and being a part of developing international NGO;
  • Working in an enthusiastic and motivated cohesive team;
  • High degree of autonomy, good sense of impact, ample room for initiative;
  • Monthly salary in a range of CHF 2000 – 2500.
  • Duration and working time: minimum 2 years.

Working time: part time (3-4 days a week).

All an applicant must have a legal right to work in Switzerland.

Location: Norlha office in Lausanne, possibility of annual regional visits (maximum 14 days per year).
