Norlha is a non-profit, non-political, secular association based in Lausanne, Switzerland, that supports remote communities in the Himalayas in building capacities that will allow their sustainable development, through integrated projects in food security, income generation and environment protection, with a strong focus on supporting women. Norlha is currently seeking a person to run its press and media relations.
Media officer
Volunteer position
The Media officer reports to the Head of Communications. He/she is responsible for creating and ensuring good quality media coverage about Norlha with the support of the Head of Communications. In addition, he/she will be required to research and prepare material for other platforms, printed and electronic.
Mission and activities
- Responsibility for helping raise the profile of a dynamic international NGO
- Help tell the story of Norlha’s humanitarian work carried out in the Himalayan region to the wider public in Switzerland
- Provide support for reporting on Norlha’s work in the international press and help develop an external communications strategy in Kathmandu.
- Initiate press coverage of Norlha by finding the stories from our activities that will grab the headlines.
- Play a key role in a dynamic organisation and communications team
Candidate Profile
- Enthusiastic with a keen interest in learning about running communications for an international humanitarian organisation.
- Experience of producing and disseminating press releases that deliver increased media and strategic presence.
- Experience of investigating, researching and preparing good quality articles and copy for different platforms. This includes preparing articles in French for the press and media, the website and for social media.
- Excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
- The ability to find and tell the personal story.
- Preferably mother tongue French with a good spoken level of English.
- Copy for our newsletter as well as for the website and social media. The Media Officer will be expected to contribute to other written communications such as institutional documents.

- Duration and working time: minimum 9 months or longer
Working time: at least 10 hours/week
Location: Norlha office in Lausanne, partial home-based work possible
This part-time, long-term volunteer position is not paid and an applicant must have a legal right to volunteer for longer than three months in Switzerland.
